King lear

Shakespeare company berlin

The story of a world in flux: wars rage outside and uncertainty scratches at every door . . . our acting troupe arrives and sets up its stage to tell a story: of  pride, madness, and annihilation.

In our outdoor summer production, a versatile company of six actors brings the entire Lear-Cosmos to life, in a radically re-imagined version of Shakespeare's mightiest play. In the whirlwind of dissolution wrought upon the characters, there is a seed of hope and renewal: "Thy life is a miracle."

This production of King Lear opened the twenty-fifth anniversary season of the Shakespeare Company Berlin 2024.

"The Shakespeare Company Berlin accompanies the old king on his journey from false modesty and gigantic hubris, through fuming anger, raging pain and bitter disappointment to madness.
But of course the Shakespeare Company would not be themselves if they did not also serve up the humor inherent in all of Shakespeare's plays to the audience in unexpected places. Because they play with verve, with a zest for the game,  and with their own new translation, they hit the pulse of the times."
