woyzeck

vagantenbÜHNE berlin

Woyzeck is a good man,  Woyzeck eats peas, Woyzeck is an abyss, Woyzeck kills Marie. That's how the story goes, supposedly inevitably. But does this model work?  A modern Woyzeck - one who seeks virtual authority in online men's forums and pick-up artist courses, who allows himself to be fed images of masculinity and protein shakes by a professor. Someone who desperately longs for intimacy and yet is actively splitting off from his humanity, piece by piece.

In our retelling, we examines the drama fragment for its contemporary relevance and explore masculinity, loneliness, tenderness and violence. Every human is an abyss - and when you stare into it, the abyss stares back.

“Director Brian Bell transports five (of the more than 25) characters from his adaptation of Büchner's Woyzeck to a present infected with addictive internet and social media terror: Four men “against” one woman, with Marie not playing a physical role, but merely being seen and heard as a pop-up avatar in the background. (Video: Clemens Walter). JulianTrostdorf (as Woyzeck) as well as Andreas Klopp (as Andres) and Thomas Georgi (as Dr. Clarus) were convincing as a trio of human monstrosities living out their interdependence - no choice, no way out. Emotionally grueling and touching.”
